Welcome to the North Dakota LifeSmarts!
What is LifeSmarts?
LifeSmarts is an educational program that develops the consumer and marketplace skills of teenagers in a fun way and rewards them for this knowledge. The Varsity program, for teens in grades 9-12, and the Junior Varsity program, for grades 6-8, complement any school curriculum and can be used as an after school activity. LifeSmarts is appropriate for public and private schools, home schools, alternative schools, as well as clubs and youth organizations.
The North Dakota LifeSmarts program is coordinated at the state level by the Attorney General’s Office, and is owned and operated by the National Consumers League.
VARSITY Program: Teams are formed under the guidance of an adult coach/teacher who must register with the NCL through www.lifesmarts.org. A team consists of one coach and five team members. However a coach can create teams of any number to participate in the online competition. Teams first compete in the online competition, independently completing three levels of 20 questions in the following categories:
• Consumer Rights & Responsibilities • Personal Finance • Health & Safety • Technology • Environment
Schools and organizations may enter more than one coach in the competition. Coaches may have multiple teams. A school can have two teams participate at the state competition. The top twelve teams will be invited to compete in the state competition in Bismarck.
VARSITY COMPETITION DATES 2011-2012:
Varsity Online Competition: September 12, 2011 through January 6, 2012
North Dakota State Competition in Bismarck: February 8, 2012
National Competition in Philadelphia, PA: April 21-24, 2012
JUNIOR VARSITY Program: Teams are formed under the guidance of an adult coach in the same manner as the Varsity program but only compete in the JV online competition. Top scoring teams will be recognized online. Click on Jr. Varsity at www.lifesmarts.org for more information.
